The Three Sisters, a monument for Lidy, is a film for my grandmother, Lidy, who fled this house with her parents in 1941—Herschelstraat number 7 in the Watergraafsmeer in Amsterdam. Part of her family was murdered during the war. She herself has passed away over 20 years ago, but the shadow of the house remains the same.
In the film you follow me and my two sisters as, together, we try to fill in that shadow, searching for stories and for an understanding of our family history. During this single day we laugh about it, think it’s a terrible idea, get angry with each other, and cry.
How do you deal with a trauma as the third generation, when each of you feels and processes it differently? Is it really our grief, our anger? And how do you relate to your sister when she looks at it in a completely different way?
